Well i may be able to help you. I managed to quit 8 months ago. Wife now also quit. I smoked about 15 marlborugh lights a day which was me cut down from around 20 a day. Ive been smoking constantly since i was 16 and am now 34. ive tried to quite alot of times before but never quite managed it.
Now just so you know, when i went out on the bike each sunday i smoked alot so there was alot of association smoking going on.
I finally decided to quit one day, i set myself a date a week later that would be my last day and just went for it. Our local boots chemist offers a quite smoking scheme where they supply you with the patches each week and only charge you the prescription charge which is £3 a month. You have to collect them from boots and they make you take a carbonmonoxide test each time. This runs for 3 months and each month they bring you onto a lower strength patch.
Now ive been here before but what worked for me this time was setting the money aside. I decided to set £3.50 asside every day, this had to be done religiously. It was put into a jar and every day i just thought about putting the money in the jar. £3.50 a day works out as £100 a month. Even if i had no money on me that day i would go out of my way to a cash machine and get the change sorted for it. 8 months later i have just spent it all on the bike and am continuing to save until next march, one year in total when i will buy more bike stuff.
This is the only way ive been able to quit and i can honestly say now i barely ever think of a cig, not even when out drinking. Its the best thing i have ever done and probably one of the things in my life im most proud of achieving as i never thought i could do it. My dad also smoked about 60 a day and then had alot of heart attacks around the age of 40, i didnt want to go the same way.
Some people find it helps to talk to someone when they really need a cig, others dont like to even think about it. Just go for it though, if i can do it so can you.
Good luck, oh and my wife is also quit after 5 months, she just bought a new iphone in cash (smoking money again)
