After checking when my bike tax was due online a few years back , I decided to check my previous bikes. It showed that the Yamaha XJR I used to own is SORN. Having checked again recently it is showing the same. Is there an easy way to trace the owner? I sold it 9 years ago so it may have changed hands from the bloke I sold to but I haven't got any contact details anyway, just the reg. I've heard the DVLA may forward a letter on if a good reason is given.

it's possible to request the details from the DVLA for a fee (think it's around £5) but you have to have "Reasonable Cause" for the information, like someone's parked in front of your drive or you're concerned about fraud.
Found this: http://www.dft.gov.uk/dvla/data/rc.aspx
Details what they deem "reasonable cause" for release of data regarding a vehicle.
The alternative is to make nicey nice with someone who works at the DVLA - get it for free!
