Hi guys, ive got a 400 bandit without variable valve timing, i dont want a 600 yet so what can i do to tune it up? thanks

You can put a small hit of Nitrous through it. My ZZR6 has 25bhp of nitrous.
Anyway, you could have an exhaust and carb kit (dynojet) fitted. Although a lot of Dyno places don't like dealing with carbs these days as it's more work than tweeking the injected models.
Alternatively, you could do some advanced training which would make you more confident and competent on the road, and therefore quicker...
Thanks for your opinion, i made my own exhaust out of stainless pipes and a micron i cut down welded and sealed, ran brill till i cleaned the carbs but its lost all its umph now, no bogging just lots slower than before! and harder to start, any ideas? :/

If it ran better before you cleaned the carbs then perhaps you should get your carbs looked at to find missing power??
I have an NSR125 that i built from scratch, bar a couple bits, that i use everyday, im waiting to get my license on my bandit, and ive just took her round the block a couple times, and i took the bike to a specialist, because its the first time im completly stumped working on and building bikes, they say they dont know what to suggest, but set them up anyway for me, and its still like that.
you've disturbed something (possibly unrelated) when you've stripped the carbs (eg trapped or kinked a pipe or similar)?
As an aside, I'm guessing the 1993 in your name means your around 19? (so only eligible for A2 / 33bhp test) - if so, I can't see any point tuning a bike up if it has to be restricted to 33bhp. Indeed, tuning up a restricted bike may cause problems getting it 33bhp-compliant.
clue to your problem is in your post regarding the fact that you have built your own end can.
Exhaust systems are a science in their own right and are a very specific part of engine tuning, therefore you will need to know what requirments the engine has regarding exhaust scavenging and back pressure at the same time you will have to alter the induction system to balance the effects that the modified exhaust has on the engine.
Put in plain english fit a standard exhaust system, unless you have the skills and knowledge to build your own system which suits the engine.
Well done for attempting the exercise there is loads of information on exhaust construction on the net so that you can get it right at a later date.

Thanks guys i really appriciatte everyone thats commented on here youve all been helpful, just to clear up a few things.
1. The bike will be restricted but seeing as the 33bhp certificate is a hoax, you do NOT need to PROOVE it is 33bhp, just has to be restricted, i have the 33bhp carb manifold kit so any tuning (Non fueling) will still improve speed and power and stay when its time to derestrict.
2.Thanks for your contribution AdieR, i think this seems the most likely, but after stripping down 6 times and letting a pro look i dont know what else to check, but thankyou.
3.The tuning wont be in vain as it will stay with the bike after derestriction, for example gearing change, engine mods, exhausts.
4. Smidget, thankyou for your opionion, however it ran better with my pipe than with the stock! much better in fact, however i too understand how challanging the backpressure and angles of waves can be to set, i just got lucky, the problem only started after the carbs came off, i have also tried standard can and my ART RACING can with no difference, thankyou guys
But... If you restrict it, and then the "tuning" increases the power to above 33bhp, then it isn't restricted enough, is it?
You don't need a restriction certificate, but DO need to be able to prove it's only 33bhp (A dyno graph will do).
I asked a couple of insurers and they said i didnt need to do that either, however i thought that was likely too!

All seems like nonsense to me? just fit a full race fairing and a pair of clip on handlebars so you can get your head out of the wind,you will probably get ten to fifteen MPH without tuning anything.
